Q. With all of those instruments, music therapy looks like it’s mostly fun and games. Do music therapists only work with children?
A. No, in fact, music therapists can be found working with individuals of all ages and abilities. You can find music therapists working in hospitals such as the NICU, pediatrics, oncology, burn units, etc.; long-term care and skilled nursing facilities, hospice, mental and behavioral health facilities, schools (yes, music therapy can be included on an IEP ?), day programs, early intervention, etc.
Though not every person in the world is a musician, most people connect on some level with music, and that’s one of the reason it can be an effective tool for positive change across the age and ability spectrum.
